Organizing & Doggie Prep

We had a pretty productive Sunday here in NSO world. We started the day by installing a new fence along the backside of our property. Said fence's purpose is to contain our future doggie. I'm not sure if it will be successful. But first, a little background. We have 6 foot tall cedar fencing along both sides of our property. But, behind our house is a protected wetlands area. And our neighborhood's bylaws require us to keep an "open" fencing back to the wetlands. All of the houses in our row and the row of houses opposite the wetlands have a white vinyl corral type thing that most certainly will not contain a doggie.

Because of the bylaws, we have very limited options for what we can do back there. What we did was install a 4 foot tall wire mesh "fence" (affixed to the current fencing and to two added T-posts) that would pass muster with the bylaws, but is neither super sturdy nor jump proof. I tried to convince Sara that I could dive over the fence no problem, but she still doesn't believe it. At any rate, we are sure that Mr. Fix It and Koji will laugh at our fence (Gus would just be insulted), but again, we didn't have many options. Either we get a doggie that won't/can't jump it, or future doggie will need to always be supervised/leashed out there. Oh well. Here is the new "fence":

Since our previous fencing was installed by a band of monkeys, there was a rather wide gap on one side where the cedar fencing "met" the corral. So, we had to correct for that. Oh, we did get some measure of proof that the new fence is not completely terrible. Just as we were finishing the last bit of the fencing, we noticed a cat running around in the wetlands. The fat cat seem crazed, chasing something (if anything) that we could not see. He wasn't heading in any particular direction, but rather zigzagging and picking up speed too. Sara, figured out what was going to happen first and yelled out "No, please NO!" But, of course, fat crazy cat ran full steam and head first into our new fencing! Ouch! He was OK, but I'm sure he left with a pretty bad head ache! Fencing remained intact. At least it past the 10-20 lb. Cat Collision test! We'll see about the dog...

We also installed some shelving in the garage to do a bit of organizing. Turns out that installing the shelving to wrap around a corner was a little beyond our abilities. The shelves don't exactly match up flush with one another. Oh well, they're just holding shoes and future leashes and such in the garage! Kudos to Retired Mama. The lazer level that she bought for us was a huge help! Even if the operators were tired and not so clever!

Nicely organized corner! Very tidy. (I like tidy.)

As for the fence, it's pretty much exactly what we used for the Gus Containment System, and he's never gone over, through or under. (He's 80 lbs now.) I know you're not looking for a monster dog, but I don't think your fence should be seen as the size-limiting factor.

All I did this weekend was desk work and bled my brakes, but those aren't nearly as photogenic activities!

And, of course, we want a fence-diving video. Before you leave, please.

Excellent FDCS (future-dog containment system)!

And very nice corner dohicky thing also. I didn't organize a darn thing this weekend. Oh well. there has to be a slacker in the family somewhere, and I say it might as well be me!

I just went back This Land and looked at some old pictures. I hadn't recalled that the GCS was so similar to the FDCS. Thanks for pointing this out! I feel way better now. The GCS looks taller (did you go 6'?) and probably is sturdier overall, because our vinyl corral isn't exactly super strong... but still, I do feel better now! Thanks. :)

I think the limiting factor on the video will be Sara actually holding the video camera. I predict not a chance on that one!

After I posted my comments and went and measured the GCS fence, and it is four feet. I also think it looks taller than the pictures you took. Odd angle, perhaps?

Both the corner and the containment fence look great.
Have a safe trip and a great time.

And the cat story reminds me of the time I got hit by a dog. Now that was funny.

So, to clarify Dave's earlier comment - I WOULD be happy to hold a camera whilst he jumped over the fence. I've gotta admit though, I'd be laughing so hard that the video would probably be of my feet!

I second what This Land said: I think your new fence with absolutely do the trick. Future Dog will see it and say, "OK, this is my land. I get it. I like it here!"
