The Fit is a little TOO fuel efficient

I love our new Honda Fit. It's a great car. But, perhaps it's a little too much fun and a little too fuel efficient. The Fit displays your real time MPGs. This kinda becomes like a little game, which really alters my driving. I'll often drive a little slower, just so I can watch the MPGs creep up. Kinda funny how things like posted speed laws never really had that effect on me. The game also affects my changing of gears and braking habits. So far, I consistently get an average of about 39-40 MPGs. This is a whole lot better than when I used to drive the work pickup truck. And it's a good bit better than the element as well. It also feels like I never refuel. I just keep driving and watch the trip meter go up and up and up. Today, I took the game too far. Wait, let me back track. This week has been really busy. The last two days after work, I knew that I needed to stop for gas. But, I also needed to get home early to take care of Molly, since Sara was busy. I figured that I'd just get gas on the way to work on Friday morning. And somehow, on Thursday it actually seemed like the Fit was getting better MPGs while running on fumes. I like winning the game. Today I lost the game. As it turns out, the MPG game is a bit of an intelligence game. And I got sacked! The Fit ran out of gas on my way to work today. I had to pull over on the side of a highway (not a major highway by any stretch). Luckily, I was able to reach Sara at work. She ran out, bought a gas can, filled it and came to my rescue. So, maybe the Fit is a little too fuel efficient. Maybe it's allergy season. Or maybe I'm just really, really pretty.

So now, when you factor in the cost of Sara driving the element to the store to buy a gas can and then to the gas station and then to rescue you, does it cancel out your savings?

At least you know at what point you run out of gas and you can play the game better!! :) And hey, you didn't run out on the way to your test, so that's good!

Instant-mpg gauges are the single biggest mileage-boosting devices out there. (The leaf one on the Fusion Hybred gets separate write-ups in the car mags.) Dee's car has one and it gives you a new measure to judge a trip by other than time, and it teaches you how to drive more efficiently - to a point, obviously.

My '74 BMW is even more efficient, given the length of time it doesn't USE ANY FUEL AT ALL! Back on the road with tranny #2 as of Friday.

I choose to ignore the extra gas required for sara to save my butt, thank you very much. ;)

I really do love having an mgp gauge. it's a great thing.

Hope the bmw is back on the road soon!!
