Pumpkin fun!

As some of you know, Dave and I have a tradition of getting a pumpkin for our anniversary. No, not as spendy as jewelery or as tasty as a romantic dinner for two ... but it is OUR tradition. From our "just married" pumpkin we get new pumpkin each year to mark the passage of time. This year we decided to expand from just the 1 pumpkin to some for decoration on our front porch. The neighborhood we live in has quite a lot of kids and we figure Halloween will be a big deal around here. Plus, forget the kids ... pumpkins are just fun. Turns out, it is not just the 2 of us that think so. We went to a local farm to get our pumpkins. They had just about every type of pumpkin and gourd that you could think of and some I'd never seen or heard of before. Besides the traditional ones, they had white ones, ones called turbans and every size from small to giant. We had fun picking out our pumpkins and weren't really paying to much attention as we shopped. But, when we got to the checkout stand 2 kids saw our cart and were delighted by the "huge" pumpkin that we had. They were laughing and pointing it out to their family. When it was our turn to pay, the 4 adults behind us were talking about the "big" pumpkin as Dave had to lift it up to get it on the scale. Right then we all noticed that it had a crack at the bottom and was leaking. So, we said that we'd just pay for everything else. We were bummed, but turns out the other group of adults were too! One of them commented that it was really too bad b/c that pumpkin had so much character! We loaded up everything, minus our big pumpkin, into the Element but decided we'd pick out another big one. On our 2nd attempt we found one that didn't have a crack and paid for it. On the way back out to the car we paused to let another shopper and her cart in. She laughed and said that the person with the pumpkin has the right of way. Seems like pumpkins make a lot of people smile. I know ours will make us happy ... hopefully, you too!

I love pumpkins!!!!!! We drive through pumpkin country (yes, there is such a thing) in route to the Cal games every week, and I ooh and ahh over the pumpkins. Maybe I can bring one of those big ones home on the plane. We can strap it in to its own seat, or put it on Steve's lap.

I'm happy the Mets won and the Phillies lost, by the way. Maybe, once the Mets get back home, they will settle down. I'll be rooting for them!

They should last longer than 2 months, as long as they don't get cracked -- we have a neighbor who has pumpkins that make yours look tiny, and they've had 'em for a few years. At Christmas, they paint them silver and red and green. At Easter. they paint them to look like Easter eggs. At Halloween now, they have to paint them back to orange and black.

People are really weird when it comes to their pumpkins...

I like pumpkins and all, but I don't necessarily think that they should be the catch-all home decoration. It seems like it would wear-off the pumpkin-funness. We actually have plans for carving these guys when it's closer to Halloween. Dave took a picture of some really cleaver pumpkins last year. So, we lack the cleaverness, but we aren't ashamed to steal good ideas! We'll post those pictures too I am sure!
