Below is from an email that I just sent to our old friend JB. Figured i'd just go ahead and blog it:
You can imagine how crushed I was by the Game 7 defeat. But, you only know half the story. While we lived in NY, we made a friend who worked for the Mets. Well, now he works for the MLB players union. He promised me a ticket to a potential world series game 3 at Shea. [You da Man, JO] It was a chance to fulfill a life long dream. I booked a flight back to NY. I arranged to get the days off from work. I had it all arranged. And in the 9th inning of game 7, obviously the whole plan crumbled. The Mets were knocked out of the world series. Heart break enough. But, I got knocked out of the world series as well. I'm gonna feel this one for a long time...
BUT, i guess the universe has a way of balancing things out. there was another seminal event this week. After searching and searching for a house to buy here in Eugene, earlier this week we thought we found the one that was right for us. To make a long story short, the owners accepted our offer on the house yesterday. We still need to go through the appraisal and inspection process, of course, but it looks like Sara and I will be first time home owners very soon. Closing right around Thanksgiving time! We are very excited.
So, it was a week of big downs & ups. Overall, that's life and boy is it good!

Mets bad, house pretty.
And no Nemo living under the foundation.
But won't many, many birds be drawn to the wetlands in the back yard?
OK, so i'm trying to make peace with the whole "birds like the wetlands" thing. However, we've been there several times (walked around the neighborhood again yesterday) and still have not seen many birds. I heard one or two while we were making the offer... Is it possible that they've all flown south for the winter already? At any rate, I'm OK with it. Really. I think as long as there are no 7 foot tall swans, then it will be just fine. The wetlands are pretty. I think i just don't like big birds and birds that are aggressive (e.g., NYC pidgeons) because they are way way out of their natural environment and that pisses them off. No, I think the wetlands are nice and natural and it will be fine. Really.
He says that - yet, I'm afraid it is not true. We were at the 5th St. Market yesterday. They finished the construction on the new shops and we were checking it out for the first time. On the ground floor there is a water fountain with the center piece being a rooster. Strange, but we walked past into the shops. On the way out we had a afternoon snack that we were going to eat at the tables near the fountain. To the right of the fountain a small group had gathered. Right after we step onto the patio area we here the sounds of a real rooster cock-a-doodle-doing! Instantly, Dave is alert and shouting at me "What is HE doing here?!" Totally valid question - it is just the fear in his voice and the lack of color in his face that makes me laugh! But, that is not the answer Dave wants to hear! So, he repeats it ... quite a few times! Best I can tell, the rooster lives there. They are having a contest to give the rooster a name. And it isn't a normal rooster - this one has added fluffy feathers around the face that makes it look like he's wearing a mask. More reason to make Dave sit so that he doesn't have his back to the rooster at ANY time! So, the wetland may pose a problem ... and we may never be able shop at the 5th St. Market again! - S
That made me laugh out loud!
I'm beginning to think the whole buying a house thing is just a ruse so you don't have to visit Mom - WHO HAS LIVE BIRDS IN HER HOUSE! They fly around and make chirpy noises and everything. Very unnatural!
Whether you want to believer HER version of the rooster story or not... I stand by my previous comments. Birds in malls are NOT natural. And that rooster was pissed--I can tell.
Okay, given that Dave is from New Jersey, the mall capital of the WORLD -- if he says roosters don't belong in malls, who the hell are we to argue??
Those Hollywood folks got it all wrong. Birds on the Plane, now that would sell!
La la la la la ...
I like how they quickly put up a new post, directing attention away from New Jersey and the unnatural fear of flying feathered freakish things. (Like robins or starlings or angry mall-stalking chickens.)
But they say birds are evolved from dinosaurs, and fear of dinosaurs seems rational enough. Think in Jersey birds are less evolved and more dinosaur-like?
They certainly have big Mall-bangs!
