I will refrain from all the cliches about spring re-birth, re-newal, or re-anewing. I will just say that today is the perfect day to:
1. Grill a sausage or hot dog (broil if you don't live in So. Cal.)
2. Smile just because the Cubs starting center fielder is a kid named Felix Pie
3. Thank the dear lord that the long baseball-less winter is finally over
4. Hug a stranger, even if s/he is a Braves fan
and
5. Open a window (preferably street side) and yell, "Play ball!"

Mets won - Giants lost. I bet I'll be saying that a lot this season. I hope that this win is one of many for Santana.
I did notice in today's New York Times that the Met's fifth starter had an 8.14 ERA in spring training. So he's clearly saving it for the regular season, I assume...
Also in the Times today I saw that Dith Pran died. When I was at Columbia I did on-call work for the New York Times and one Saturday they sent me way up in the Bronx to do a story about a hotel being converted (or uncoverted, I don't remember) to emergency public housing. The editor told me a photog would meet me there. I took the subway up and got to the building and a while later the photographer came up and introduced himself and I didn't quite catch the name when he said it because he still had a heavy Cambodian accent. But my brain put it together - it was Dith Pran, and it was an honor to meet him outside some motel in the Bronx.
And Dith Pran was a Mets fan.
No, maybe not. I'm with Shelia, we'll be saying this a lot: Mets win, Giants lose. Oh well. It's a new season, and anything can and will happen.
Play ball!
Baseball, schmaseball.
Dith Pran wasn't that old, was he? Very sad
