Yard work ... still fun after 1 month

So, I have recovered from my illness enough to head to Jerry's, a local home improvement store, and buy some more of the cool German gardening tools that I love. This brand has a bunch of different pop-on tools that go onto various handles. The reason I like them so much is there are longer and fatter than normal handles, so I don't have to stoop or wrap my man-hands around them 1.5 times. So, while it is still hard work, at least I am not getting extra aches and pains. Anyway, today I bought an trowel, a 3-prong cultivator, a rake and an edger. Like Koji's Kitchen, we didn't want to have a power lawn mower or edger. Partly because our yards are small, partly because I am pretty clutzy and power tools are a danger in my hands, and partly for the environment. So, today was my 1st edging outing. The previous owners may have edged some time, but not recently. So, today was some effort. My other yard work included planting some flowers to break up the existing shrubs. We also picked up some solar lights and had them lining the path to the front door. But, because of the porch and garage side lights a few of them wouldn't turn on. So, we rearanged them to line both sides of the drive way. We also went on a walk around the neighborhood to get ideas from other people's front yards. We have some plans, but you will have to wait probably until Spring to see the end results!

So, the flowers are just 99 cent primroses. I know nothing about them and there is a good chance they will die in a week. But, I figured I could afford a $5.94 loss and wanted some color. The little stake said they were winter flowers - so we will find out.

Yes, mom the solar lights are in the way of future edging. Our plan for the spring is to take out a 6 to 9 inch path along the driveway for another planter bed and we'll move them back then. Until then they will just be popped out for edging. We also plan to extend the front flower bed along the diagnal line that the porch to the bent part of the walk path. I am not a shrub fan, so those might have a short life. Same with the evergreen thing that is there. We'll see.

As for the gardening tools - so cool! Having a longer pole for the edging really made a difference. Normally I'd have a sore lower back today from the stooping - but I am totally fine! I'd be happy to show you the tools and the aisle in Jerry's where they are sold! Thanks to all for thinking our first attempt at yard work went well! - S
